Should you pay or fight a Chicago parking ticket?
For most Chicago tickets, fight it. If you contest and lose, you owe the same fine you would have paid on day one, as long as you pay within 25 days of the ruling. And of 287,532 mailed contests decided on tickets issued 2023–2025, 59% were dismissed. The case is weakest for camera tickets (speed 21%, red light 28%) and strongest for expired plates (87%) and no city sticker (79%).
Even so, 93% of Chicago parking tickets (non-camera, issued 2022–2024) are never contested at all.

When paying is the better call
- Your reason isn’t one the City accepts. Hearing officers decide on a fixed list of defenses. Of mailed city-sticker contests that lost (2023–2025), 23% were recorded as “Failed to Select one of the Codified Defenses.”
- The deadline has passed. A parking ticket has to be contested within 21 days of the date it was issued, and a mailed contest counts by its postmark. A camera ticket’s window runs from the date the City mails the notice, not the date of the violation.
- The average saved is a few dollars. For the low-rate types at the bottom of the table, your time may be worth more than the average return, unless you have a specific defense.
Why a dismissal rate isn’t your odds
Drivers choose whether to contest, and people holding a receipt or a photo of a missing sign are more likely to. So these rates describe how contests of each type turned out, not how yours will. What they do show is that for most ticket types, a contest with a real defense behind it is not a long shot.
The one choice that always costs more: ignoring it
