My Chicago parking ticket doubled. What now?
Once a ticket has doubled, the contest window has closed, so the job is to stop it getting worse: pay it, or put it on a City payment plan before unpaid tickets make your car boot-eligible. Chicago adds the penalty 25 days after a determination of liability. It is common: 18% of paid Chicago tickets issued 2022–2024 were paid only at the doubled price.
What happens if it stays unpaid
A car becomes boot-eligible at 3 unpaid final determinations, or 2 over a year old. The City boots about 48,500 cars a year (2022–2024), and the boot, tow and storage fees alone averaged $134 per boot, before paying the tickets that caused it.
What still helps
- Pay it. Paying closes the ticket at its current amount and keeps it from counting toward a boot.
- A standard City payment plan. For tickets that already carry penalties: 15% down on a first plan, up to 24 months, at least $25 a month. It waives the 22% collection cost and prevents booting for the tickets on the plan. The down payment rises if you have defaulted on a plan before.
- A hardship plan. Same stage, for a qualifying hardship: 5% down on a first plan, up to 36 months.
- An early plan for the tickets that haven’t doubled yet. A $25 minimum down payment, and the City assesses no penalty on those tickets if you complete the plan.
- Clear Path Relief, if money is tight. For households at or under 300% of the federal poverty guideline: complete a plan covering the original fines from the last 3 years, and older debt plus the penalties on newer tickets are waived. Expired-meter tickets are never waived. City details.

Can I still contest a Chicago parking ticket after it doubles?
Not through the regular contest. A parking ticket has to be contested within 21 days of the date it was issued, and a ticket only doubles after that window has closed.
